5:30 pm Nova Scotia Aphasia Association: Presentation Panel on Neuroplasticity and Intensive Therapy

On June 14th at 5:30 p.m., the Nova Scotia Aphasia Association celebrates its first anniversary.

The Nova Scotia Aphasia Association celebrates its first year with a presentation panel on Neuroplasticity and Intensive Therapy followed by open discussion for professionals who work with stroke survivors, stroke survivors, their family and friends, and the public. The presentation will take place at the Weather Watch, 5th floor Dickson Building, University Ave., Halifax. The panel features Dr. Gail Eskes, Department of Psychiatry, Dalhousie University, Dr. Shaun Boe from School of Physiotherapy and Department of Psychiatry, Dalhousie University, and Elizabeth Allard, private Speech Language Pathologist.
The Chair of the Nova Scotia Aphasia Association, Judy Arbique is a stroke survivor: “I had stroke in 2008 just before my 50th birthday. As a result of my stroke, I have aphasia.” “Aphasia impacts a person’s ability to process language and communicate. It’s frequently caused by stroke but can also result from head injuries, cerebral tumors or other neurological conditions,” she adds.
“The presentation will be followed by a question and answer period with members of the panel,” says Judy Arbique.
“The Nova Scotia Aphasia Association is sponsoring the Neuroplasticity and Intensive Therapy Panel Discussion to “overthrow the centuries old notion” that brain damage is permanent—that the brain cannot adapt or recover after a stroke or other injury. Current knowledge of neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change, produce new brain cells and form new connections tells us that the old beliefs are wrong. The brain is flexible and “plastic”—anything is possible.
Arbique is convinced that it should be possible for stroke survivors to “be the best we can be.”
The Nova Scotia Aphasia Association is a nonprofit organization that promotes public education, rehabilitation and support services to assist people with aphasia and their families.

12:30 pm Huntington Disease Symposium
Please join Dr. Ed Wild, neurologist and co-founder of HDBuzz.net for a riveting presentation that is full of wisdom. Optimizing life is the primary focus of Dr. Wild’s message. He will explore the good news and how we can prepare for the journey; what we can do to make a difference now, and what we can do to make the most of the support available – maximizing our independence.
Research and clinical care in HD are constantly moving forward. Without effective disease-slowing treatments it can easily feel like nothing is happening. Until that breakthrough arrives, there is still plenty we can do. “Optimizing Life” with HD means staying active, informed, and involved. Join Dr. Wild as he helps us to see what we can do and how we can do it.
